The Etco Foundation Programme

Register your interest

For those who do not have the required Level 2 credits, but want to apply for an etco apprenticeship, we have the NZCEE L3 Etco Foundation Programme. The Foundation programme is like a pre-trade, in that they are the same NZQA qualification, but etco incorporates additional elements to support graduates moving into the etco apprenticeship application process towards the end of their studies, and to integrate learning with experience.

Our Foundation programme students can apply for employment as an etco apprentice before their course finishes and will know before graduation whether they have been offered a position with etco.

Unfortunately, we can not employ every graduate from the Foundation programmes, but we can help graduates find apprenticeships with other employers in the sector. When these graduates have secured an apprenticeship, Etco will continue to support them with night classes and block courses and they will receive Etco support in the workplace, alongside their employers, for the duration of their apprenticeship.

The qualification provides pre-apprenticeship and service technician foundation knowledge of electrical engineering and is suitable for anyone wanting to enter the industry and who does not yet have an electrical apprenticeship or who wants to take the many other career pathways available with this qualification.

The programme includes:

  • Basic knowledge and principles of electrical theory
  • Basic knowledge of fault diagnosis and testing techniques
  • Basic knowledge and principles for installation and maintenance of electrical machines and equipment
  • safe working procedures and practices
  • legal limitations of electrical legislation
  • how to work ethically and professionally within the electrical industry

You will be taught electrical theory and some practical knowledge by registered electricians, during this one-year, three-days-a-week programme. You are encouraged to use your spare time to obtain part-time work experience in the electrical industry; to put what you’ve learned in the classroom into practice in the real world.

This programme is eligible for Free Fees funding as of September 2020.
