What Training is involved?
On-Job Training
This happens as part of your day to day work. It involves working with and assisting an electrician and being shown how to do the job. By watching, learning and gradually doing more of the job yourself you will reach a level of competence where you can do the job unaided.
Off-Job Training
It is important that you understand not only HOW to do the job competently and safely but also WHY it must be done a certain way. To do this you must learn about electricity and its effects. This is done by completing courses of study in Electrical Theory and Regulations. This will involve study at home and attending evening classes and block courses. You will be expected to demonstrate your level of understanding of Electrical Theory in continuous assessments and final examinations. ETCO employed apprentices are fortunate enough to be trained by ETCO at our own Training Centres and night class venues around the country.
Training Coordination As an ETCO apprentice your personal coach and mentor will be the same apprenticeship coordinator that employed you. Your apprenticeship coordinator will arrange your placements with host companies and will visit you regularly to assess your progress and plan your training. He/she will monitor your performance so that he can assist and guide you to ensure that you are getting the most from your apprenticeship.
