How do I become an ETCO Apprentice?
At ETCO we pride ourselves on producing the best apprentices. Therefore, we select those applicants who we consider have the right stuff to become a future asset to our industry.
If you have:
- * Good school grades in Mathematics, English, Science (a minimum of 12 credits per subject in either NCEA Levels 1 or 2) or equivalent. Excludes Statistics and Probability or Communication Skills as part of the 12 credits.
- * A commitment to on-going study
- * A positive work attitude
- * A minimum of a current restricted manual drivers licence and own transport to get to work
You can apply for an ETCO apprenticeship at any time and we will confirm its receipt and process it for consideration during one of our monthly intakes.
If you meet our minimum academic criteria you will be required to successfully complete a series of aptitude tests before being invited for an interview.
The purpose of the aptitude tests is to assess your
reasoning skills in a series of situations. You can find some examples of the
types of questions you will get in your tests at the following web addresses.

Following a successful interview, you will then be required to undertake a physical and medical examination (including eyesight, colour blindness and hearing assessments.)
If you are successful this far, you will spend ten days at our ELITE residential training facility at Ramarama, south of Auckland. During the ten days you will receive an introduction to the electrical industry and receive training in a variety of subjects:
- * First Aid and CPR
- * Safe working practices and testing
- * Basic hand tool skills
- * Introduction to theory
- * Component familiarity
Following successful completion of the ten day course you will be employed as an ETCO apprentice.
ETCO will issue you with a Work Task Log Book for the recording of on-job training progress.
The course, provided by ETCO leads to your Registration as an Electrician and achievement of your Electrical Engineering qualification. Course fees for all accepted applicants are $1750.00.
Does an apprentice get paid?
As an ETCO apprentice you are paid from the first day of your apprenticeship.
Pay rates for apprentices vary but are usually increased as you progress and become more competent and productive. Competitive pay rates are made even better by ETCO through the provision of a well equipped toolkit, safety gear, all course material and the payment of your ongoing training and tuition at no cost to you. The current rate for a first year apprentice is $10.25 per hour.
