ACADEMIC
You must have:
- Completed NCEA L2:
Maths - 8 credits
Science - 8 credits (will accept alternative Science subjects, ie Electronics or IT)
English - 8 credits (will accept UE Literacy).
- A positive work attitude and a commitment to on-going study
- A minimum of a current restricted manual drivers licence and own transport to get to work
- NZ Citizen or Permanent Residency
To qualify for a Modern Apprenticeship you will need to be aged between 16 and 21.
APTITUDE
The purpose of the aptitude tests is to assess your reasoning skills in a series of situations. You can find some examples of the types of questions you will get in your tests at the following web address.

Alternatively your library will have books on aptitude tests.
You will need to sit a series of aptitude tests including Mechanical Reasoning, Numerical, Spacial, Verbal and Visual skills.
Test 1. Mechanical Reasoning
This test consists of a series of diagrams showing gears, pulleys, levers, pivots, etc. From a range of multiple choice answers the candidate must determine the direction of the resultant force or movement.

Test 2. Numerical
This test consists of short numerical problems which the candidate must solve using practical arithmetic without the aid of a calculator.

Test 3. Space Visualisation
This test consists of pictures of numbered blocks stacked in different 3 dimensional configurations. The candidate must determine how many other blocks each numbered block is touching.
Test 4. Visual Pursuit
This test consists of a series of numbered lines which cross each other at numerous irregular points to reach a numbered destination. The candidate must follow each line by sight only to determine destination. This is similar to a circuit diagram.
Test 5. Verbal Reasoning
This test consists of a range of statements and facts. The candidate must decide from a list of conclusions those which are true or false.

MEDICAL
You will be required to undertake a physical and medical examination (including eyesight, colour blindness and hearing assessments).
ELITE COURSE
If you are successful this far, you will spend ten days at our ELITE (Entry Level Induction Training for Electricians) residential training facility at Ramarama, south of Auckland. During the ten days you will receive an introduction to the electrical industry and receive training in a variety of subjects:
- First Aid and CPR
- Safe working practices and testing
- Basic hand tool skills
- Introduction to theory
- Component familiarity
The 10-day Induction course fee for all accepted applicants is $2100.00.
EMPLOYMENT
Following successful completion of the ten day course you will be employed as an etco* apprentice.
The etco* Apprenticeship leads to your Registration as a NZ Electrician and the achievement of your Electrical Engineering qualification.
